Our First ER Visit

So on Friday, we went to the park as a family because the Hubby was off of work. Peanut fell and when I picked him up, blood was pouring out of his mouth. When he finally let us have a peak, it looked like a chunk of his tongue was missing. Both Hubby and I agreed, we needed to go to the ER.

Called ahead and they were rude on the phone. That should have been my first clue. Peanut was crying, blood kept pouring out the whole way there.

We get to the ER and they look at us like we were stupid. We were admitted, waited what seemed like forever for the doctor, by then the bleeding had subsided. Turns out mouth injuries bleed more and the doc looked at us like we were stupid too.

$200 co-pay later, we felt so dumb and like we freaked out over nothing. We aren't those parents that rush our kids to the doctor over every little thing. I'm a Googler usually, but I couldn't think of what to do. Seeing all that blood.

Peanut is fine and that's what matters. This is why we have a Health Savings Account. Live and Learn. Everyone we have talked to said they would have taken him too which makes us feel better about the whole thing. What would you have done?

  1. It is so hard to determine what is serious and what isn't. I don't want to run in for every little thing, but also don't want things to get worse by waiting to long. Where is that parent manual?!

    1. I know, right? I'm glad we did take him in though. Lessons were learned. And we have our tax return coming, so that can pay for it. :P

  2. Glad Peanut is okay. I took my son to the ER just a few weeks ago. It can be scary. Sometimes I think the co-pay is scarier!

  6. As a nurse with a background in trauma nursing, I can firmly state there was NO cause for rudeness on the part of those who cared for you and your family. I'm embarrassed to know that you received this sort of treatment.

Thanks for sharing at http://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2016/02/old-san-juan-pigeon-park.html, and I hope the little guy recovers quickly.

  7. When your kiddo bleeds a lot its always terrifying!! I cannot believe they were rude to you though... how ridiculous!! It would've been nice if they could've consulted you over the phone and let you know that you didn't need to come in, or signs that you did have to go in.... some people :P Glad everything is a-ok though!! Tongue bites are the worst :(

  9. If I wasn't sure I would go to the ER better to be sure. I almost bite my tongue off when I was around 10 years old. My Mom took me to the hospital.

  15. With six kids (all grown up) I spent more hours than I can count at the ER or a Doctor's office. Grandchildren are just as accident prone too. Hang in there..

  17. I'm a disabled nurse that has worked ER and I think you did the right thing. We can never be too careful with our children. I'm so sorry you had a bad experience while at the ER, please know that there are one's with caring Doc's and nurses. Some people shouldn't be in the profession.

  18. Better safe than sorry! It is so hard to tell sometimes how bad it really is especially in the mouth. Our Mommy instincts kick in and we just want to make sure our babies are ok, nothing wrong with that! I would have done the same thing.
