Match It Up Game - Help Kindergarteners Use Numbers as Adjectives

Anyone planning on doing a little homeschooling this summer? I want to give my child a break, but I also don't want her to forget everything she has learned this year. So we have been researching fun and creative ways for her to continue her education this summer.

Match It UpCheck out this excellent way to practice ordinal numbers, or numbers that identify order within a group. First, find a deck of playing cards. Second, divide the deck by suit. Third, you're ready to play! You and your child will have endless fun trying to match numbers as you turn over cards. Practice saying the numbers together, and your kid will be a pro at using numbers as adjectives in no time!

What You Need:
  • Deck of playing cards (with the face cards removed)
  • Paper
  • Pencil
What You Do:
  1. Prepare your materials by removing one suit from the deck for each player. Deal one set of all 10 cards to each player.
  2. Have the first player shuffle his set of cards. Then, he will flip the cards over one by one to create a line of 10 cards. While flipping the cards over, he should say, "First, second, third, fourth," etc., for each card.
  3. Players are awarded one point for each number that matches its correct sequential position. For example, turning over an ace first would count as a point, turning over a two second be another point, turning over a three third would be yet another point, and so on.
  4. The scorekeeper records the number of points player one received, and play continues on to the next participant.
  5. Play continues on for 10 rounds, or until time is called. The winner of the game is the person with the highest score.

  6. Do you play games with your kids during the summer? Do you still continue their education even when school is out? What do you think of this game?

  1. We always played cribbage over the summer. I can still add 15s quickly.

  3. I've never heard of cards being played like this for kids, but I like it and I think my grandkids will too - something different. Thank you for sharing!
