Camping Recipes You Should Try

If you are looking for something fun to do with the family this summer that is closer to home, a camping trip is the perfect holiday idea on a budget.

With the current state of the world we have been left uncertain, and overseas travel is unlikely to be safe for a long time. If you do want to take your family somewhere this summer, a camping trip close to home is a great idea and will allow you to stay away from people and enjoy some quality time with the ones you love.




Grab yourself some 3 room tents for families, pots and pans and plenty of board games, and let’s take a look at some of the easy family meals you can create during the perfect camping trip!


Easy s’mores

The most iconic meal to make for your family this year has to be s’mores. S’mores consist of graham crackers, chocolate, and toasted marshmallows and are the most mouthwatering treat you can eat on a summer's night by the fire. S’mores are super easy to make, and to create the perfect after dinner snack:

Ingredients:
- Graham crackers
- Dark chocolate, or chocolate spread
- Jumbo marshmallows

1. Using a skewer, poke your marshmallows and put them on the fire. You can let everyone do their own marshmallow for a bit of fun, just make sure the kids don’t burn themselves!
2. Meanwhile, grab 2 graham crackers and place a chocolate square on each, or spread some chocolate on each.
3. Once the marshmallow is beautifully toasted. Sandwich it between the crackers.




Steak stir fry

If you are looking for a quick and healthy dish to make on the fire during your camping trip, a stir fry can’t be beaten. To make this stir fry you’ll need some steak, noodles, and a load of amazing veg.

Ingredients:
- 500g sirloin steak, sliced thinly
- Olive oil
- Salt and pepper
- 400g straight to wok noodles
- 1 sachet hoisin sauce
- 8 spears asparagus, chopped
- 1 handful bean sprouts
- 1 carrot, julienned
- 1 handful mangetout, chopped
- 1 handful baby corn, chopped

1. Heat up a pan on the fire. In a bag or bowl, mix the steak with salt, pepper, and olive oil until coated. Add to the pan.
2. Sear and cook the steak to your liking and then remove.
3. Add hoisin sauce, vegetables, and stir fry for 2-3 minutes. Add steak and noodles and stir. Serve.

Spicy jerk chicken

Jerk chicken might be a little ambitious for younger children, but if your kids are a little older and love some healthy spice, this chicken dish is the perfect camping trip meal, served with salad or rice.

Ingredients:
- 4 chicken breasts, or 8 thighs
- 70ml dark soy sauce
- 70ml red wine vinegar
- 2 tsp. allspice
- 1-2 scotch bonnets (depending how brave you are)
- 1 sprig thyme
- 50g ginger
- 100g onion or spring onion

For this recipe it is best to make the sauce before the trip and keep it with you in a container.
1. Add all of the ingredients apart from chicken into a blender and pulse until thick and smooth.
2. Pour the sauce onto your chicken and marinate for at least 2 hours if not overnight.
3. If using chicken breasts, butterfly them. If using thighs, score the skin. Place onto the grill over your fire and grill until charcoal, fragrant, and beautiful. Serve with some coconut rice to cool you down, or a fresh salad.

Easy chicken curry

Chicken curry has to be one of the easiest batch meals to make for your family, and on a camping trip it is easier than ever to make a flavorful chicken curry for the mob.

Ingredients:
- 4 chicken breasts, chopped
- 8 bamboo or metal skewers
- 1 tbsp. garam masala
- 2 tbsp. low fat yogurt
- 1 tbsp. curry powder
- 1 tsp. paprika
- 1 tsp. cumin
- 1 tsp. turmeric
- 1 tsp. coriander
- 1 tsp. ginger paste
- 1 tsp. garlic paste
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 tin chopped tomatoes

1. Create a chicken marinade with 1 tbsp. yogurt, and garam masala. Allow the chicken to marinate for an hour.
2. Place chicken pieces onto skewers and grill the chicken until beautiful and browned. Place to one side.
3. Into a pan, place onion, garlic paste and ginger paste and cook for 3-4 minutes.
4. Add the spices to a bowl with a tablespoon of water and mix into a paste, add to the pan and stir.
5. Add the chopped tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes.
6. Add chicken and remaining yogurt, and serve with rice and naan bread!

Naan bread

Speaking of naan bread, we thought we would provide you with a simple 15 minute naan bread recipe to use on your camping trip.

Ingredients:
- 250g strong white flour
- 250g yogurt
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tbsp. olive oil
- Dash of milk

1. In a bowl mix the flour, yogurt, baking powder, salt and sugar.
2. Add oil and a small dash of milk and bring together into a dough. Add more milk if it is a little dry.
3. Leave for 10 minutes.
4. Heat up a frying pan with a tiny bit of oil. Split your dough into 4 and roll out to the size of the pan.
5. Add to the pan and cook for a few minutes on each side until charred and beautiful. Serve with your favorite curry!

Cheesy chili hot dogs

Hot dogs have to be the ultimate crowd pleaser, and when you are on a camping trip and have access to a fire it is almost rude not to make some dogs for the family! The quantities here depend on how many of you there are and how hungry you are!

Ingredients:
- Hot dog buns
- Good quality sausages
- Cheese, grated
- 500g beef mince
- 1 can kidney beans
- 2 tbsp. cumin
- 1 tbsp. chili powder
- 1 can chopped tomatoes
- 1 small onion, diced
- Sour cream

1. Start off by making your chili. The great thing about this is you can use the leftovers the day after! Brown onions and beef in a pan.
2. Add spices and kidney beans and cook for a few minutes.
3. Add tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes.
4. Grill your sausages and lightly toast the inside of the dog hot buns.
5. Place some cheese directly onto the hot dog buns and melt. This will stop the chill making the bread too soggy.
6. Build your dog: add sausage, a generous heap of chili, and lots of cheese. Melt the cheese if you want, and dollop sour cream on top!

  5. We used to go camping a lot. Now the kids are grown and so are half of our grandkids. We know that our camping days are now numbered! We have made s’mores and hot dogs ��, but not chili cheese ones. Even if we’re not going to camp, we can make these yummy recipes at home and have them for family night. I saved this on Pinterest so I can do just that! Delicious �� Thank you for sharing!
