Our kids' brains are tired, and children of all ages really need opportunities where they can take time out each day "unplugged" to relax and focus. Meditation offers this break and helps kids function more effectively and clearly. Children today also have reportedly high stress levels. To help them take a break, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) encourages parents to share meditation with their children. The simple act of teaching children how to stop, focus, and just breathe could be one of the greatest gifts you give them.

Children today have higher expectations than we did as children which means that they can feel more stress. My daughter personally struggles with this especially at end of the school year because of all the testing and expectations to reach certain goals. She is so smart, but constantly worried that she won't make it to the next grade even though she has never had any issues in school, in fact she as invited to be a part of the gifted program at school. So finding something that can help her learn to be mindful and give her mind a break was very important to me.

I recently received two Zafooz from Moms Meet to test out. What is a Zafooz? A Zafooz cushion is a relatable way to introduce mindfulness practices to children in order to help improve brain function and provide relief during stressful times. A cushion and breathing buddy in one, the zafooz is a fun and functional combination of a meditation cushion and a plush animal.

Here are a few benefits of meditation for children:

1. Enhanced focus
2. Fostering compassion and self-esteem
3. Boosting confidence - According to MindWorks, "Mindfulness for children helps kids gain self-awareness and become more confident. The confidence develops naturally when kids learn from their meditation practice that they don’t have to react to all of their thoughts and emotions – they can choose which ones merit their attention and response. Confident kids are better equipped to deal with unfamiliar situations. Thanks to this adaptability, they become better problem solvers and develop a deeper appreciation of life."
4. Building empathy and happiness

Zafooz can help to relieve overwhelming emotions, anger, or frustration, reduce hyperactive behaviors, and improves concentration. I love that Zafooz Resources are provided to help teach techniques for mindfulness and meditation to young children.

My daughter has always been prone to stress and worry. She is a classic empath. Feeling others' emotions constantly can weigh heavy on a person. So, the Lotus Ladybug is a perfect fit for her because this Zafooz is ideal for the high spirited, highly sensitive child. The child who may tend to take on others energy along with their own. Like the Lotus this Zafooz may remind them that they should always be themselves no matter what their environment they come from.

My son received the Mindful Monkey. This Zafooz is perfect for him because he is an aware, independent thinker and definitely a curious child. This Zafooz can is ideal for ones who enjoy having fun with others but crave their alone time too. You might find that this child may have no problem sitting for a brain break, connecting to their breath and quieting their body and mind. For my son, his Zafooz is helpful w to control his outbursts and tantrums. Reminding him to breathe has been working wonder.

A few features that I personally like about the Zafooz is that they have a handle for a child to easy tote around and the outer fabric has a zipper so it can be taken off to launder.

Do you meditate? Does your child experience stress? How do you try to practice mindfulness in your life?

  1. I would find it hard to meditate, but it would probably good for all of us to do that!
