How to Get into a Back-to-School Routine

We have been back to school for a month now. It has been a little easier for me to get back into our back-to-school routine this year then it has been in years past. I think it is because I have a few tips that I started following this year and it really helped us get back into the swing of things.

1. Start Preparing Your Family Early. Even during the summer time my kids have a bed time. Although sometimes we don't always stick to it exactly, we still follow our night time routine so they can wind down. But when back-to-school time is nearing, start getting the kids in bed by the time they would when school is in at least a week before school starts. It's also a good idea to try to make them up early as well.

2. Create a Calendar. School time is a busy time of year. Not only do we have activities that are school related as well as assignments to remember, but we also have after school activities plus my husband has a tedious work schedule. So we have a dry erase calendar that everyone can see and then I also have a personal planner that I use for my work so I can stay organized.

3. Make a Practice Run. It's a good idea to see how long it is going to take you to get everyone dressed, make lunches, eat breakfast, and drive to school(s) in the morning. Trying a practice run with all of these things in play and at the same time because of traffic, isn't a bad idea. We aren't at a new school, but my son is going this year too. So we had a little bit of an adjustment time wise. My husband also doesn't understand that traffic can make your child late, so you have to prepare for that.

4. Plan 'Get Ready' Routines. I had to set out a 'get ready' routine for my daughter (she is only 6) because she would try and doddle while she was getting ready and then she would get upset when I was trying to rush her along. Now she has a 'get ready' routine that includes making her bed. Everything she does is in order and helps her go through the process in the morning. I have one for me too. :)

5. Always Enjoy a Pick-Me-Up. Coffee is a must have for me. This mom needs that extra boost to get back into the back to school routine. I have always loved my Keurig. I recently received the Keurig K55 in Rhubarb to share in my Back-to-School Shopping Guide. Simple touch buttons make your brewing experience stress free, and multiple K-Cup pod brew sizes help to ensure you get your perfect cup. Use the 6oz brew size to achieve the strongest brew. The large 48 oz. water reservoir allows you to brew 6+ cups before having to refill, saving you time and simplifying your morning routine. Also compatible with the Keurig Classic Series My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter, so you can brew your own ground coffee too. But I personally love all the varieties of coffee that Keurig has to offer: Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Green Mountain Coffee, Gevalia, and so many more includes teas and cocoas as well! I just brew my coffee in a Keurig Stainless Steel Coffee Mug and enjoy my perfect little pick-me-up to start the day.

  2. When my teen was younger, we would start pushing back her bedtime over a week so by the time the first day of school came around, she wasn't tired! And of course, coffee has always been a MUST whether back to school or just a weekend morning!

  13. All my kids are grown with families of their own.
I used to make their lunches the night before when they took lunches. They usually bought the school's hot lunches.when they were in different schools or grades, they would take the school bus.i always gave them extra change to use the pay phone in case they had to call. Back then they had beepers - not cell phones. 3 of my grandkids graduated from school and have cars and sometimes they take their younger siblings to school. You've made a few good points! I wished I would have had a Keurig back when my kids were young! We had that freeze dried instant coffee! Things have really improved and made things easier for parents and children. A routine does help!

  17. My best tip is to get ready the night before school. As you pack up dinner leftovers, use some to pack lunches. Make sure all clothes/ socks. shoes, etc are ready to put on. Double check backpacks for forms to sign and assignments to complete. These tips will ease the morning schedule.
