But before we dive into the recipe, have you checked out our other holiday favorites on the blog? From non-alcoholic holiday drinks to where you can stream your favorite Christmas movies with the kids, there’s something festive for everyone. And speaking of movies, what’s your favorite version of The Grinch?
Personally, I’m a big fan of the newer DreamWorks animated Grinch movie. I especially love the scene where the Grinch gets chased through Who-ville by the carolers, did you know that the carolers are voiced by Pentatonix? I’ve loved them ever since their early YouTube days, and their version of Christmas music always gets me in the spirit.
Now, back to these cute little bites of holiday magic...
What Are Grinch Bites?
The best part? You don’t need to be a professional baker to make them! Whether you use a boxed cake mix or your favorite homemade recipe, these bite-sized treats are simple and stress-free.
Ingredients for Grinch Bites
- 1 box of cake mix (any flavor—vanilla or red velvet is festive!)
- 1 can of frosting (or about 1 cup homemade buttercream)
- Green candy melts or white chocolate with green food coloring
- Sprinkles (red hearts work great for a true Grinch look!)
- Lollipop sticks (optional if making cake pops)
- Wax or parchment paper
How to Make Homemade Grinch Bites
Start by baking your cake according to the package or your homemade recipe. Let it cool completely. You can also use leftover cake if you have some from a holiday gathering, just make sure it’s not too dry.
Step 2: Crumble the Cake
Once cooled, crumble the cake into fine crumbs using your hands or a food processor. Place the crumbs into a large mixing bowl.
Step 3: Mix with Frosting
Add in about half a can of frosting (you can add more as needed). Mix until the cake crumbs stick together like dough. You want a texture that holds shape without being too sticky.
Step 4: Form into Balls
Use a small cookie scoop or your hands to roll the mixture into 1-inch balls. Place the balls onto a wax paper-lined baking sheet.
Step 5: Chill
Place the tray in the freezer for 1 hour or refrigerate for at least 4 hours. This step helps the balls firm up and makes dipping easier.
Step 6: Coat in Candy
Melt your green candy coating according to the package instructions. If you're using white chocolate, add green food coloring once melted.
Dip each cake ball into the coating using a stick or fork. Let the excess drip off and then place the coated ball back onto the wax paper.
Step 7: Decorate
Before the coating dries completely, add sprinkles! If you can find red heart sprinkles, it’s a great nod to the Grinch’s heart growing three sizes. You can also roll them in red or green sugar crystals for extra sparkle.
Step 8: Let Set & Serve
Let the Grinch Bites set at room temperature or place them in the fridge to speed up the process. Once they’ve hardened, they’re ready to enjoy!
You can also freeze them for up to a month, just store them in an airtight container.
