What You Need To Know Before Shopping For Infant Formula

The market for infant formula has exploded in recent years. While this is good for new parents who now can choose from a variety of options for their child, it has also created confusion and decision paralysis in determining what the best formula truly is.

When you shop for infant formula, there are some things you need to keep in mind to make the process easier on yourself. Generally, sticking with well-known and established infant formula brands will give your baby adequate nutrition and a host of other benefits.

To delve a little deeper into the nuances of infant formula, let’s look at some specific things to keep in mind before heading to the supermarket.

Consider Your Baby’s Nutritional Needs

Infant formula contains everything that a growing baby needs to develop properly and meet the standard developmental milestones. While there are vigorous debates and opinions on the pros and cons of infant formula against breastfeeding, it has been established that infant formula does indeed contain enough nutrition to ensure that your child is properly fed.

Beyond ample macronutrients including fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, infant formulas typically contain an essential blend of minerals and vitamins to accommodate rapid growth. These include substantial amounts of iron and vitamin D which are needed in abundance by babies whose bodies are changing quickly.

Good quality infant formulas also contain the omega fatty acid DHA which is vital for the healthy development of your baby’s brain and nervous system.

Be Mindful Of Your Child’s Dietary Sensitivities

If your child has specific dietary conditions that prevent them from consuming infant formulas that are derived from cow’s milk, there are options available to ensure that your infant remains adequately fed. Once you have identified that it is, in fact, a dairy allergy that is causing your child to not take well to standard infant formulas, try using a soy or other alternative formula preparation to make things better for your child.

While some of these alternatives may not contain the same amount of nutrition as dairy-based milks, reading the labels on these products can give you a sense of how you might supplement the rest of your child’s nutritional needs.

Take A Holistic Approach

Consider using an infant formula that also includes pre and probiotics. These substances are critical for the development of your child’s resilience and immunity. Contemporary medical science has strongly established a link between the human digestive system and our mental health and overall well-being. Developing your child’s gut health early on is a great way to ensure that they remain healthy and happy throughout their life.

Remember The Convenience Benefits

If you are hesitating in choosing infant formula and feel guilty about not relying strictly on breastfeeding as a source of your child’s nutrition, remember that formula feeding offers several convenience benefits for new parents as well. Rather than allowing the physical and mental toll of breastfeeding from causing you excessive grief, it is perfectly reasonable to use formula feeding for your child as an alternative.

With formula, you can also precisely gauge how much nutrition your child is receiving rather than playing a guessing game as when you are breastfeeding.

Explore Your Options

If you are unable to breastfeed or if you simply want to have the convenience of mixing your breastfeeding with formula on occasion, explore the infant formula selection in your local supermarket. You are sure to find an option that is ideal for your child’s specific dietary needs. As always, consult with your family doctor before making any changes to your infant’s diet. They will be able to verify that the infant formula you are planning to use contains all the building blocks that are essential for your child’s growth.

  1. I breastfed each of my babies until they were at least 3 months old. My oldest I breastfed the longest. I think to six months, if I can remember right. Because it was just the two of us and I could relax more. My milk came in better, etc. This is such good advice and I pinned this! A mom feels bad if her baby is miserable! We want to do everything to make them feel better!! It is worth the time, like this article says, picking the wrong one can cause digestive issues and bowel problems, spitting up more. Plus some babies are allergic to milk. A lot of them grow out of these allergies! Thank goodness! This article is really helpful for new mommies. Thank you for sharing!
