Healthy Turkey & Sweet Potato One-Pan Hash Recipe (Family-Friendly & Fitness-Approved!)
Thursday, October 7, 2021
Think of it as a healthy, hearty hash that combines lean ground meat, sweet potatoes, and veggies into one delicious skillet meal. You might call it a Turkey Sweet Potato Casserole, or even a Turkey Potato Hash. I just call it delicious, simple, and something my whole family happily devours.
Once everything is chopped and ready, it all cooks in one pan, which makes cleanup a breeze, a true lifesaver on weeknights.
🕒 Quick & Easy – Ready in under 30 minutes.
🧼 One-Pan Wonder – Minimal dishes. Need I say more?
🥗 Nutritious & Filling – Full of fiber, protein, and healthy carbs.
🔁 Customizable – Swap meats, veggies, or potatoes to your liking.
🧠 Weight-Loss Friendly – I used this exact meal during my fitness journey, and it helped keep me full and on track.
Here’s what goes into this simple turkey hash recipe. Most of these are kitchen staples, and the rest are easy to grab during your weekly grocery run:
2 small sweet potatoes, chopped (you can sub with regular potatoes if preferred)
1 lb. ground turkey (or swap with lean ground beef or venison)
1 yellow bell pepper, chopped
1 small yellow onion, chopped
2 cloves minced garlic (we buy in bulk, makes life easier!)
1/4 cup water (or more as needed)
1 tbsp. chili powder
Optional: shredded cheese to melt on top (adds creaminess and flavor)
Brown the Ground Meat
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook your ground turkey with the minced garlic until no longer pink. If you’re using lean ground beef or venison, make sure to drain any excess grease.
Add Onions & Bell Pepper
Stir in the chopped onions and cook until soft and translucent. Then add your yellow bell pepper and sauté for another 2-3 minutes until slightly tender.
Cook the Sweet Potatoes
Add in the chopped sweet potatoes and pour in 1/4 cup water to help steam them. Sprinkle in your chili powder and stir well to combine. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover the pan, and let cook for about 15 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender. (You may need to add a bit more water if it evaporates too quickly.)
Top with Cheese (Optional)
If you like a little melted cheesy goodness, sprinkle shredded cheese over the top and cover the pan for 1-2 minutes until melted.
I use MyFitnessPal to calculate the calories in my meals, and I was honestly shocked when this one came out to just 377 calories per serving. It’s so satisfying and hearty, you’d never guess it was that low-cal!
This recipe makes about 4 generous servings, and it keeps really well for leftovers too. I love portioning it into meal prep containers for quick lunches or dinners on busy nights.
This turkey and sweet potato skillet is so versatile! Here are a few ways you can switch it up:
🥩 Change the Meat: Try lean ground beef, venison, or even plant-based crumbles.
🥔 Switch the Potatoes: Not a fan of sweet potatoes? Use russets or red potatoes instead.
🧀 Add a Little Cheese: Melt some cheddar, Monterey Jack, or pepper jack for a creamy topping.
🌶 Spice It Up: Add jalapeños, crushed red pepper, or taco seasoning for more kick.
🥬 Toss in More Veggies: Zucchini, spinach, mushrooms, or kale all work great.
As a mom constantly balancing everything, from school schedules to errands to trying to sneak in a workout, this meal just works. It’s healthy, easy to make, and kid-friendly (even my picky eater gives it two thumbs up when there’s cheese on top!).
Plus, if you’re on a weight loss journey, like I was, it helps to have meals you look forward to eating. I never gave up foods I loved, and potatoes were definitely on that list. I just found ways to enjoy them in moderation and stay within my calorie goals. That mindset is what helped me lose 65 pounds and keep it off.
