Exploring High Falls State Park

In our efforts to start a healthier lifestyle, my husband and I have taken up hiking again. We are not trying to lose weight; we are trying to get more active and eat a balanced diet. My husband's birthday was on Monday, so we decided to take a trip over to High Falls State Park since we had never been before. Located northwest of Macon, High Falls State Park is named for tumbling cascades on the Towaliga River. Boat rental, ramps and fishing docks provide easy access to the park’s lake, known as one of Georgia’s top fishing spots for hybrid and white bass.

The day started a little chilly, but it has been feeling like Spring almost nearly day here in Georgia, so it did warm up. It was actually the perfect day. Not too hot, not too cold, slight overcast so the sun didn't beat down on us. My will-be-three-in-March son decided his 30 lb. self wouldn't walk most of the way and of course we forgot our Lillebaby carrier, so my poor husband carried him most of the time.

In the early 1800s, this area was a prosperous industrial town with several stores, a grist mill, cotton gin, blacksmith shop, shoe factory and hotel. High Falls fell from prosperity in the 1880s when a major railroad bypassed it. Today, the park is a popular camping destination and a relaxing side trip for travelers on I-75.

We started on the Tranquility Trail which represented its name very well. It was a 2.5-mile hike around these gorgeous, wooded area with bridges and streams. We stopped to eat lunch and let the kids play on the playground. We then decided to go on the trail that was closest to the rapids. Although it was only a mile long, it was very hilly. Even if my son had been willing to walk, there were many spots where he had to be carried.

We had a blast and walked over 15,000 steps! My daughter did amazing. She didn't complain at all and seemed to really enjoy it. I'm exciting to create more fun adventures with my family this year.

What were some of your new year resolutions?
