What is Dinosaur Day?

Celebrated every year on June 1, Dinosaur Day invites dinosaur lovers of all ages to travel back to the Mesozoic Era and learn about the incredible creatures that once roamed our planet.

Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago during the Mesozoic Era, often called the "Age of Reptiles." The word "dinosaur" means "terrible lizard" in Greek and was first coined by scientist Richard Owen in 1842. While dinosaurs disappeared about 64 million years ago, scientists believe many modern birds are actually descendants of these prehistoric giants!

Dinosaur Day is a wonderful opportunity to visit museums, dig into dinosaur facts, and enjoy some prehistoric-themed reading together.
