What is IFTTT and How Can it Help Busy Moms?

We all have our own family routines, from breakfast to playtime to bedtime. Technology like the platform IFTTT can help simplify these routines and make our lives easier.

You may not be able to brunch with it, but IFTTT  will quickly become your new best friend. IFTTT is a technology that makes all your internet connected devices and apps work with one another. IFTTT stands for If This, Then That. It is great for moms because it can make their lives easier and simpler. IFTTT can free up a mom’s time so she has more time to spend with her kids or take a well deserved wine break.

IFTTT is both a website and a mobile app available on iOS and Android devices. It is not a physical piece of technology. This is ideal because the last thing a mom needs is something else to clutter her house that the kids could get into.

IFTTT may sound like a complicated technology that only people in Silicon Valley can understand, but it is surprisingly easy and simple to use. To set up an integration between two different apps, two different devices, or a device and an app, you must use applets. Applets are essentially the conditional statements or pairings you create between two services. It makes the two devices speak the same language.

Parenting can be stressful, but IFTTT can help eliminate some of that by reminding you to breathe and take time for yourself. When you use IFTTT to pair your Hue lights and alarm, you  get a daily meditation reminder on your phone automatically and your lights will dim on their own.

Have trouble keeping track of all those soccer practices, rehearsals, and playdates? IFTTT can help. IFTTT can automatically create a to do list in your phone or add a reminder in your phone for every email you star on the Gmail app.

Worried about leaving the kids home for a bit? Use IFTTT to connect the Ring doorbell, a smart doorbell which can be controlled on the Ring app, to your Hue lights. This way, your house lights automatically turn on when motion is detected outside.

You can even integrate your bed with IFTTT through the Eight Smart Mattress. You can then connect your bedtime routine to other devices and apps like Hue lights and WeMo enabled coffee maker to make waking up and going to bed easier. You can set up integrations like: pair your alarm with smart light bulbs to get woken up by lights turning on gradually in your bedroom — or in your kids room to wake them up more smoothly than a phone alarm would!

Between getting the kids off to school and making their breakfast, sometimes you don’t have time to make your morning cup of Joe. You can use IFTTT to have Eight brew your coffee for you when you wake up.  You can also pair Eight with your Nest thermostat to automatically turn the bed warming feature in the Eight Smart Mattress if the temperature drops. Learn more here.

There are hundreds of other pairings you can create that work best for you. You don’t need to buy complicated, expensive products to make your life easier.

Kids are expensive enough, but luckily this service doesn’t a cost penny. You simply sign up with your email and create a login and a password.

  1. The app may not cost anything but the products that it links will. I'm on the fence about smart home products. I can see the appeal.

  3. OOO sounds super techy but something that many people could use. I'm not great at incorporating technology into my life to simplify it but I can see that if/when I go back to work I will want to consider something like this.
